THANKSGIVING! “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100 NIV)
Today is a special day of Thanksgiving in America and wherever Americans are gathered around the world. For most Americans it is a time of gathering of families, where possible, for a celebration of God’s blessings on the country and people of America. Many will not think of how God has done a special work in America and their thoughts will be on the efforts of man to bring about the prosperity, peace, and multiplicity of peoples from around the world we enjoy. But Christians know that what we enjoy in America is because of what God has provided over the course of several centuries in very special ways and at very special times. I believe it has been America’s response to God’s gospel message and the inclusion of God in our personal and national life along with the missionary zeal and spirit shared with the rest of the world that has brought God’s blessings to America. And we should not fail to mention that God has used America to share its material and spiritual blessings to the rest of the world.
As we gather today, whether as families, as individuals, or in some other group let us remember to pray for America as a nation and for ourselves as individuals that we may experience spiritual revival and the renewal of placing God once again in a prominent place in every segment of our society. As surely as God has blessed us God can also remove His hand of blessing from us. Let us read and reflect on Psalm 100 for the God who placed those words in His bible is the same God who is our shepherd today and He loves us and is faithful to us. Let us also be faithful to Him and praise His name. And for sure let us enjoy our time together with those who are important to us and let us enjoy the abundance of food God has provided for us and let us remember to pray for those in other parts of the world who aren’t as fortunate as we are.
Today is a special day of Thanksgiving for my wife Millie and me. Today is our wedding anniversary, the number of which will remain unspoken, but the rumor by some that we are older than dirt is just not true. We have spent our prior anniversaries in a lot of different places but today we are at home and we are hosting for dinner the part of our family that lives in the Delray Beach area of Florida. This group includes our son, some grandchildren, a great grandchild and several other people we love as part of our family. We are thankful for this opportunity.
And I am thankful for my wonderful wife and the many years we have had together from our teen years until today. Millie has been a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and an extraordinary partner in ministry as we have served churches and missionary organizations most of our adult life. As Proverbs 31:30-31 says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Millie is certainly to be honored for her life lived for the Lord and she is a great cause of Thanksgiving for me on this special day. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
